The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Founded in 1861 to promote industrialization in the United States, MIT adopted the polytechnic university model and emphasized laboratory teaching in applied sciences and engineering. The institute is known for its research and teaching curricula in the physical sciences, engineering, and more recently in biology, economics, linguistics, and management. The institute usually ranks highest among the best universities in the world.
